Migration Is a Miracle
Every year, the Sandhill Crane returns to the San Luis Valley.
A prehistoric wedge of over 20,000 cranes journeys thousands of miles along ancient flyways, navigating wind, weather, wetlands, and agricultural corridors to arrive at one of their most important staging grounds in North America. Here, the dance of cranes feeds on spent grain from the crop fields decorating this South-Central region east of the Continental Divide. adding to their ancestral diet of snails, frogs, and small fish.

To me, migration means ecosystems endure. Migration means ancient somatic memory.
Migration means trust in a landscape that welcomes your arrival—a trust reinforced only by habitats left intact.
Wetlands across the West are under pressure, and here in Colorado, our own headwaters are severely impacted by our massive lack of snowpack and rainfall this season…
Water and land policy shape survival. Conservation, when managed equitably, is relational and ongoing. We’re exploring organizations in the Mountain West committed to equitable, indigenous-led land management as we determine who our next impact recipient will be (more details to come).
I created Ancient Migration, our newest Mountain Messengers design, honoring a bird that has outlived ice ages and still returns, year after year.

Detail from Ancient Migration - 4-color screenprint on organic cotton
This first run is limited to 75 editions only. Each shirt is screen-printed on 100% USA-made organic cotton and will debut at the 43rd Annual Monte Vista Crane Festival in Monte Vista. Our printshop partner here in the Front Range specializes in water-based ink, a process that effectively dyes the garment with Pantone colors for a lasting look and feel.
When these 75 are gone, this run is complete.
Ancient Migration now nests alongside our first two Mountain Messengers:
Kingfisher Clarity — inspired by riverbanks, stillness, and decisive action.
Magpie Mystery — rooted in curiosity, intelligence, and social bonds across open land.

Ourfirst three Mountain Messengers designs.
Together, these three designs are an homage to the flora and fauna of mountains and valleys — to the ecosystems that shape us as we relate to them.
If you’ve been following along, you know we’re bootstrapping this brand intentionally. Small runs allow us to:
Avoid overproduction
Maintain quality and domestic manufacturing
Stay nimble and responsive
Grow in alignment rather than chasing scale
For now, we run with t-shirts. One super soft organic cotton garment, done well. (Not to mention being amongst the 3% of garments sold in the United States that are knit, cut, sewn, and dyed in this country’s dwindling garment sector.)
Regional events like Crane Festival allow us to test, connect, and refine with real people in real landscapes. We aim to expand our offerings this summer, thoughtfully and sustainably, as this community grows with us and we expand into larger festivals.
Pre-ordering ensures:
You secure your size before the festival
You can pick up at the booth or have it shipped
You become part of the first 75 editions of Ancient Migration
This shirt is for the birders who pack headlamps.
For the photographers who wait for first light.
For those who understand that loving cranes means protecting water.
And for the bird nerds who find freedom in open skies.
Pre-orders close on Wednesday, the 4th at Noon (and shipments are expected to go out on Thursday, March 5th)

With respect for long journeys and returning wings,

P.S. We’re excited to share that we’ll be vending at Hydrophonics Festival in New Mexico, May 7–10. The festival takes place along the Animas River at Tico Time River Resort, a spot that’s especially dear to us. We’ve attended music gatherings there for the past four years, and the combination of good beats, river time, outdoor adventure, and real community keeps us coming back.
This is the festival’s first year, organized by a regional sound system crew and a close-knit group of friends. It feels like the perfect size for us as we continue growing into this scene thoughtfully and organically.
More to come!
